Why Plant Trees in Residential Landscapes?

Trees benefit the Dallas/Fort Worth community by improving air and water quality by filtering natural pollutants above and below ground through their biological plant processes. In North Texas, where the summers are long and hot, they provide much-needed shade for homes, significantly reducing heating and cooling costs. Additionally, trees in residential landscapes help reduce flooding and erosion by slowing runoff.

Best Trees to Plant in Texas

The best trees to plant in Texas are ones that are native or well adapted to local soil types. Choosing a tree that is adaptable to our alkaline soil and climate will be easier to care for and less likely to cause problems down the road. It’s also wise to choose a tree that is hardy and tolerant to both heat and drought stress so they can survive during our long summers. The great thing about choosing a tree suitable for North Texas is that you’re not limited! Whether you have a large or small property and are looking for shade, privacy, or aesthetic value, there are a variety of trees for every homeowner.

Tree Planting Tips: How to Plant a Tree in Texas

Here are the basic steps and best practices for successful tree planting in Dallas, TX

  • Choose a native tree, the ones we listed above are great options!
  • Avoid choosing trees with V-shaped or multiple trunks, wounds, weeds growing in the pots, and roots growing out of the pots.
  • Choose the right location. Depending on the tree species, choose a space accommodating the size of the full-grown tree. This includes knowledge of underground utilities and overhead power lines. Proper planning will allow you to fully enjoy your tree and reduce issues that can compromise the safety of your residential landscape in the future.
  • When digging the hole, dig only as deep as the root ball’s height and twice as wide as the root ball’s width. This provides a good foundation for your tree and loosens the soil to help easier root establishment.
  • Lift the tree by the root ball, not the trunk, when setting it into the hole.
  • Ensure the tree is straight before filling the hole with native soil. The native soil should be moist to encourage root system establishment.

New Tree Watering

Newly planted trees and shrubs need proper and consistent watering until the root system has a chance to establish itself and requires more water than established trees. New trees should be watered thoroughly when you plant them. After planting, water them daily for 1-2 weeks, every 2-3 days for 3-12 weeks, and water them weekly 12 weeks after planting until the roots are fully established.

How Much to Water New Trees

The amount you should water new trees depends on varying factors like trunk size and level of maturity. New tree watering also needs to account for differences in season, weather conditions, soil type, drainage, and more. Rather than focusing on the exact volume of water that your new tree requires, you should concentrate on watering deeply and properly. Frequently checking your soil is equally as important and serves as an indicator of whether more water is needed.

Where to Water New Trees

Apply water directly over the root ball, and be sure to check the soil around your tree. The soil should not be constantly wet but moist. If the soil is completely dry, water again.
