Are you trying to grow a tree, but worried about tree health because your favorite tree on your property doesn’t seem to be growing? Or, are you looking to plant new trees at your home or commercial property, and looking for something that will grow fast, either for increased shade or aesthetic appeal?
As ISA-Certified Arborists and a professional tree services company, we commonly hear from homeowners and commercial properties who are concerned that their trees aren’t growing properly. To help you out, we’ve created this blog post to share some of the most common reasons a tree isn’t growing properly, as well as to provide a list of fast-growing trees for the Dallas area if you are looking for a tree to quickly mature on your property.
The Life of a Tree Might Be Affecting its Growth
All trees have an expected life span. Some trees live for only a few decades. Others, like the live oak, can live for centuries. And just like young kids grow like weeds and eventually slow down in their late teen years, tree growth begins to slow down the older a tree gets.
If you are trying to grow a tree but it is an older or more mature tree, it’s very likely there is no tree health issue at hand causing it to grow slowly. Your tree is simply at the point of the life of a tree in which it has naturally stopped growing as quickly as it used to.
Accidentally Over-Watering a Tree Can Stunt Its Growth
When it comes to watering trees, some people think the more, the merrier. However, this simply isn’t the case.
While it’s true that newly planted trees need to be watered on a more frequent basis, established trees should be watered on a more relaxed schedule. In general, here are the rules you should follow to grow a tree and make sure you are properly watering your trees and maintaining sound tree health:
- Water trees every 2 weeks. The only exception to this rule is during droughts, during which time trees should be watered more frequently.
- Before watering a tree, feel the soil directly around it. If the soil is moist, the tree already has enough moisture and doesn’t currently need to be watered. Check for soil moisture again in a few days before watering your tree.
- Water trees slowly – don’t turn on the hose at full-speed to quickly soak the soil. Instead, we recommend you use a hose with a light flow of water, or a soaker hose so that water comes out at a slow and steady pace.
- Your trees, in general, need 10 gallons of water for every inch of trunk diameter. To determine how to properly reach this tree watering amount, multiply the tree diameter by 5 minutes to get your total watering time. Remember, the water flow should be slow.
To Grow a Tree That’s Malnourished, You Need Proper Tree Nutrition
Some trees don’t grow appropriately due to tree health issues because they are malnourished and need proper nutrition to grow and thrive. Every year, you should be applying tree fertilizer to your trees to nourish them so they will grow strong and fast.
At TreeNewal, our ISA-Certified Arborists have the perfect tree nutrition solution for you. We create our own special blend of tree fertilizer with MitoGrow™ Pellet 3-IA Application that we can apply to your trees so you can grow a tree as quickly as possible, as per the average growth per year for its species.
Additionally, some malnourished trees have a tree health issue because they are oxygen-suppressed. In this case, our team of tree care specialists can perform an Arborist function called root aeration to increase the oxygen flow to your tree.
